You do good to the society by doing good in your fields. If we follow your argument, shouldn't we all be trying to clean up politics and develop India? Why blame somebody else for the awards they have been given ? There is a lot that we can learn from these people and anybody else that reached heights in their fields what ever that may be.
There is no selfishness in having ambitions and dreams and working hard to achieve them. They deserve all the love and respect they are receiving even if you don't like it.
RIP Akkineni. He made use of the opportunities. As said in earlier comments,both stalwarts of yesteryears were totally self centred and caste centred. Both of them were young with a lot of following at the time of Independence. Never cared for the country. However in tinsel world they achieved greater heights by blocking opportunities for others.
For above comments on his non eligibility of legend status for not participation - I think he is legend for whatever he is achieved in cinema field. Every person need not have to die for country as long as one does not participate in antisocial activities.

It is all a matter of how many hearts somebody touched. Today, we are seeing people like anna hazare getting love and respect. Some professions are dependent on public like movies and politics. You need to win people here to succeed. And you win by performing well. If you don't perform well you are not remembered. There are other professions that are not dependent on public, like science and others.
I agree that scientists and freedom fighters contribution to society is the greatest. But that doesn't mean we should not celebrate arts and artists. It is an unfair comparison to compare artists with scientists.

I agree technicians in movie industry are artists, Stage actors are artists, singers are artists, directors are artists, lyricists are artists, true music directors are artists...but not movie actors.

The reason I would say about movie actors are not artists is you just got to see a shooting how they make...you would laugh at them and never say I am the fan of so and so...

Ex: xyz bank(or any firm)
1. knows about the business or needs of the public (sell their services at some cost and provide them best services)
2. in order meet the public demand...they gather the requirements and either outsource it to some company or recruit some people like you who got well trained
3. you analyze the requiremets and simply automate the bank duties that directly serve the public...and some part of money goes to your bank account every month...
4. Here while doing ur work you have boss / manager to monitor your work whether you are in track that meets requirements which serve public...if you are not in track...you will get warnings and then eventually you get fired if not track after some warnings....what this means you are working for public altimatly...money is involved in every layer...
Similarly, writer / director prepare a story and engage lot of other people to make a product (movie)..actors are just part of lot of other people involved, lyricist, singers, directors, technicians, art directors, music composers, dubbing artists...
Actors don't even say their own dailogues, have dupes in fightings...you just got to see shooting then you will realize the what heroes do ...they shoot sec by sec or min by min and the final movie product is made by lot of people..
I am leaving this up to you on this to judge urself...I am not here to educate you...you may be more senior than me..
So, finally you & me no less than these false legends doing their own jobs / duties for our needs (basic or luxuries) and some are getting hi focussed more than what they do...what I think it is not good for the society...

#5. even if you perform outstanding and invent some new frameworks to achieve the final product....you get patent rights and what not..you will be rewarded with a promotion and and 30% hike....thats it...

All the people are in service sectors...some people get hi focused unnecessarily...

He could be selfish and acceptable amount of selfishness is necessary for progress. Everyone is selfish in one way or other,it is agreeable as long as it does not encroach upon others zone. Unless we get something in return,we normally do not contribute our brain and brawn for any activity associated with development. ANR did the best in the field of his choice and won the hearts of people. The reverence shown by his admirers goes to his excellence in art. May his soul rest in peace.
